Monday, Oct. 6

A caller in the Fort Seward area reported a bear had broken into a garbage containment building and made a mess. Police, wildlife troopers and Fish and Game were notified.

A person reported the free vehicle taken from the Small Boat Harbor parking lot several weeks ago had been located and returned.

A caller at 3 Mile Haines Highway reported a bear got in their garbage. Police, wildlife troopers and Fish and Game were notified.

Sunday, Oct. 5

A Front Street resident reported a sow and two cubs pushing a locked dumpster around. Police, wildlife troopers and Fish and Game were notified.

A dispatcher on duty heard a loud bang from the Tlingit Park area. An officer was advised.

A Front Street resident reported a domestic dispute over child custody. Police responded but one party had left by the time the officer arrived.

A Small Tracts Road resident reported shooting a large female sow that had entered his porch. The person tried to scare the bear with a gunshot, but it returned and charged, causing the man to shoot the bear. The sow had two cubs, which ran away. Wildlife troopers determined the shooting was in defense of life or property.

A Mathias Avenue resident asked police to check her property because she could hear intruders talking. Police responded but found no evidence of intruders.

A caller at 25.5 Mile reported a snowmachine trailer with blowers had been taken from his property. Troopers were advised.

A caller reported a mudslide near 7 Mile Lutak Road. DOT closed and cleaned the road.

A Sunshine Street resident reported a culvert was overflowing and he was afraid the road would wash away. Borough road crews were advised.

A caller reported the back door at the Southeast Alaska State Fairgrounds barn had blown open. Police contacted fair personnel and left a message.

Saturday, Oct. 4

A person came to the station to report a mudslide at 2 Mile Lutak Road. DOT responded and cleared the road.

A Chilkoot Estates subdivision resident reported bears had gotten into the “bear-proof” garbage cans and strewn garbage about. Several residents called in later to report the bears were back in the garbage again. Police and wildlife troopers responded and chased the bears off.

Police received a report of an unattended death of a man in the Chilkat Lake area. Troopers were advised.

A caller asked police to perform a check for trespassers on a Small Tracts Road residence. An officer responded and found no evidence of trespass.

Friday, Oct. 3

A Chilkoot Estates subdivision resident reported bears trying to get into a bear-proof trash can. The caller was advised to stay indoors.

A caller at 38 Mile Haines Highway reported rolling his vehicle into a ditch. He refused an ambulance. Troopers responded.

A Small Tracts Road resident reported he walked into a Main Street bar and saw the respondent of a domestic violence protective order. The caller said the respondent said, “See you later” as the caller left the bar. The caller thought this was a violation of the protective order. An officer was advised.

A ferry terminal employee reported a mud slide on Lutak Road. DOT removed the debris.

Two callers in the Chilkoot Estates subdivision reported bears pushing around trash cans. Police responded twice and tried to scare off the bears, but they kept coming back. Police said the cans needed to be emptied, cleaned and secured in order to fix the problem.

Thursday, Oct. 2

The harbormaster reported a vehicle illegally parked and blocking access to the fuel tanks in the ice house parking lot. Dispatch called the vehicle owner multiple times without success. An officer issued a parking citation and initiated towing.

A caller reported an unauthorized vehicle parked in a church parking lot on Second Avenue. The vehicle was moved.

A caller reported receiving unsolicited texts from apparent “scammers.” She was advised to block the phone number. 

A caller reported hearing a gun shot near the airport. Police investigated and noted several people had launched a boat to retrieve a moose they had shot. They were east of the airport at about 3.5 Mile. Police are investigating whether the shooting occurred in the townsite and violated the borough’s illegal discharge laws.

A traffic stop resulted in a warning for speeding.

Wednesday, Oct. 1

A Mathias Avenue resident reported a suspicious man loading her wash bucket with things and carrying them up the road. She said she could not see him, but could only hear him talking. She said she knows it is “the kid that likes to suck up his snot.” Officers were advised.

A caller reported bears were back at the borough shop on Union Street.

Dispatch helped a man contact harbor personnel to fuel his boat.

A caller reported his vehicle had broken down and was parked on Third Avenue. He said he would move it in the morning.

Tuesday, Sept. 30

A caller near Fourth Avenue and Union Street reported a bear had tipped over a garbage can and strewn it along the road. Police told the garbage can owner to secure the can and pick up the trash.

A caller reported a single-vehicle accident at 5 Mile Porcupine Road. There were no injuries. Troopers were advised.

A business manager near the intersection of Front Street and Main Street reported an apparent attempt to break in to the business. A window pane had been shattered. An officer responded and initiated an investigation for criminal mischief.

A Dalton Street caller reported two bears had tipped over a dumpster at apartments. The caller scared the bears away.

A traffic stop resulted in a citation for failure to carry proof of insurance and a warning for speeding.
