A caller reported what appeared to be the start of a sinkhole on Sunshine Street. Public works officials were advised.
A Main Street business owner reported a strange man “salivating over babies.” The business owner called because women walking with their babies downtown had mentioned the man. The man was described as creepy, non-descript, overweight and wearing glasses, a hat and sweatpants. The man didn’t try to contact the women or the babies. Police said they know who the man is and he often stares at people.
A Fourth Avenue resident reported finding someone else’s vehicle on her property. Police told the caller she could call a tow company.
A caller reported a U-Haul parked in a crosswalk on Main Street. An officer responded and the vehicle was moved.
Saturday, Sept. 27
A Chilkoot Drive resident reported a bear had tipped over a bear-proof garbage can. The caller scared the bear, which ran into the woods, but the caller could still see the bear’s eyes shining. Dispatch told the caller to stay inside and keep his dog inside.
A caller reported a suspicious bundle covered in trash bags in Tlingit Park, with a rifle leaning on a nearby tree. The caller thought the bundle was a person. An officer said the person was a vagrant who frequents the area.
A caller living in the area of Fourth Avenue and Dalton Street reported receiving harassing phone calls. Police initiated a harassment case.
A caller in the area of Fourth Avenue and Union Street reported being harassed on Facebook. He was advised to un-friend and block the person harassing him.
A person reported seeing a trooper vehicle speeding on Main Street while she was walking her children. The caller felt her children had been put at risk. The information was sent to troopers.
A caller asked for help with a moose kill. They were put in touch with the wildlife trooper.
A woman asked for help contacting a California police department. She said her mother had posted a plea on Facebook for someone to call 911. Dispatch provided her the phone number for the California department.
Friday, Sept. 26
A business at the Haines airport reported an overnight break-in. About $150 was taken. An officer responded and initiated an investigation for burglary.
A borough employee received a threatening phone call from a man involved in a civil forfeiture of property with the borough. Police said the issue is being tracked.
Dispatch received word that blasting would take place at 6.5 Mile Haines Highway the next day. DOT had been advised.
An out-of-state caller asked police to conduct a welfare check on a friend who had boarded the ferry in Anchorage and was headed for Bellingham. The friend had last been heard from while in Haines. The ferry confirmed the friend had boarded the ferry to continue to Bellingham.
A caller reported pedestrians walking dogs in the middle of Small Tracts Road, impeding traffic.
Thursday, Sept. 25
A caller reported a bear had overturned a dumpster and was going through the garbage at a borough shop on Union Street. Wildlife personnel were advised.
A caller reported an apparent phone scam. He was told to call his service provider to block calls.
A person reported a vehicle collision had occurred the previous day at a business near the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Main Street. The parties exchanged insurance information. The caller also picked up report forms at the police station.
A caller asked police to perform extra patrols around a friend’s house in Haines. Dispatch told the caller to have the homeowner make the request.
Wednesday, Sept. 24
A Small Tracts Road resident reported someone possibly stole his son’s vehicle. An officer responded, checked the area and found the caller’s son driving the vehicle.
A resident asked police to perform extra patrols of his boat at the Small Boat Harbor after receiving text messages from someone threatening to harm the boat.
A Small Tracts Road resident asked police to help calm down their teenage child. An officer responded and helped resolve the issue.
Tuesday, Sept 23
A caller reported her friends had vacated a rental home on Union Street, but the landlord had placed items that didn’t belong to her in her vehicle. The vehicle had been parked near the rental. An officer spoke with the caller and told her to leave the property if it didn’t belong to her or her friends.
An out-of-state caller asked for help locating and serving a civil packet on a Haines resident.
A person came to the police station to provide additional information on a theft of belongings from a vehicle parked at the airport
A Klukwan resident reported a theft at her residence. Troopers were advised.
A caller on Third Avenue reported a vehicle speeding down the hill. An officer was advised.
A Piedad Road resident asked police to conduct extra patrols and look out for people parking vehicles in the road. An officer responded and found a vehicle belonging to a political canvasser, which the person moved.
An officer contacted a person driving an ATV on state highways and gave a warning for not following ATV laws.
