Monday, Sept. 22

A caller on Piedad Road reported hearing gun shots. Police advised duck season was open and people were hunting near the river.

A motorist driving toward town on Lutak Road reported a possible drunk driver. Police were unable to locate the vehicle.

A caller near the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Union Street reported an ATV operating recklessly on state and borough roads. Police were unable to locate the ATV.

An officer reported an unmanned vehicle left running on Lynn View Drive. Police contacted someone at a nearby residence who said they had forgotten the vehicle was still running.

A motel owner near the intersection of Mud Bay Road and Second Avenue reported a room rented to a man who was supposed to check out two weeks ago. Police told the man it was a civil issue. The owner called back and said the court told him he could kick the renter out.

An officer initiated a case for operating without a license after seeing an unlicensed person get out of the driver’s side of a vehicle that had parked on Portage Street.

A caller on Oceanview Drive reported water pouring over the road. The borough water and sewer department was advised.

A caller at the Small Boat Harbor reported someone had taken a vehicle advertised as “free” on the community website. The caller had just gone to get the title from the vehicle’s owner, but when the caller returned, the vehicle was gone. Police said this matter wasn’t a theft because the car was advertised as free. The car owner also didn’t want to report the car’s removal as theft.

A 6 Mile Mud Bay Road resident reported receiving a threatening phone call from another Haines resident. The person had threatened to physically assault the caller. An officer was advised.

Sunday, Sept. 21

A caller reported a vehicle parked at the Letnikof Cove Harbor with all the doors open and no one nearby. Troopers were advised.

Troopers reported a slide at 5 Mile Lutak Road. State road crews responded.

A caller reported a slide at 12 Mile Haines Highway. State road crews responded.

A person reported rocks in the road at 7 Mile Haines Highway. State road crews responded.

A business owner asked police to perform extra patrols at a seasonal business that is now closed.

A person reported a tree downed on the road past the ferry terminal on Lutak Road. State road crews responded.

Saturday, Sept. 20

A Deishu Drive resident reported bears were still in the area as a person had recently spotted one in the woods nearby. Fish and Game was advised.

A man came to the station to report receiving strange phone calls that sounded like they were routed through a computer. Police told him not to give out personal information.

A caller reported a vehicle parked on the Beach Road sidewalk. The vehicle was gone when police arrived.

A person reported an ATV speeding on Fourth Avenue. Police found the ATV and warned the driver for speeding.

Friday, Sept. 19

A caller reported a tree hanging over the road on Third Avenue near Old Haines Highway. State road crews were advised.

An out-of-town caller asked police to conduct a welfare check on her mother living on Allen Road. Police determined the woman was fine.

Thursday, Sept. 18

A caller reported a sow and cub on Small Tracts Road. The caller was concerned about children waiting for the school bus. Police patrolled the area but didn’t locate bears.

Police served a civil packet on a Haines man.

A caller reported a sow and two cubs in trash cans on Small Tracts Road. The caller said he set off fireworks to scare the bears and would do so again.

Wednesday, Sept. 17

A caller reported a possibly disabled boat heading down the Chilkat River from Chilkat Lake. The caller was concerned the boater might be stranded. Troopers were advised.

A person reported her juvenile son ran away from their Small Tracts Road residence. The person called back to say the juvenile came home. An officer responded and talked to the juvenile.

A caller near the Mount Ripinsky trailhead at 7 Mile Haines Highway reported overdue hunters. Troopers were advised and planned to conduct a search in the morning due to the late hour, fog and a report that the hunter’s wife had seen a light high on the mountain. The search was canceled after the hunters returned safely.

Tuesday, Sept. 16

A Mathias Road resident reported a brown bear under the neighbor’s apple tree. Wildlife troopers were advised.

An inmate at the Haines Jail was remanded for a probation violation that occurred before being put in jail. The inmate remains in custody.

 A business employee near the intersection of Main Street and Third Avenue asked police to conduct a walkthrough of the building because of a suspicious man in the area. The man was “scruffy” and talking to himself. Police responded but the man was gone.
