n this season of giving -and shopping- here is another reason to “By Haines” and shop locally: Local businesses support the nonprofits that help make our community a great place to live. The Southeast Alaska State Fair is one of many organizations that benefits. Support from 40 local businesses in the form of money, time, expertise, equipment and other valuable resources help sustain vibrant Fair events and maintain the fairgrounds for community use. A full list of sponsors is available on the Fair’s website, seakfair.org. I’d like to specially recognize the Fair’s 2019 platinum-level sponsors from Haines, those local businesses that gave at the highest level: Alaska Marine Lines, Howser’s IGA, Lutak Lumber, Olerud’s Inc., Sockeye Cycle, and Haines Brewing Co. I would also like to highlight two very special gifts to the Fair in 2019. Sockeye Cycle donated a 15-passenger van. In honor of the Fair’s 50th anniversary, Haines Brewing Company brewed a 50th Anniversary Golden Ale to be served at the Fair, and donated the proceeds to the Fair. Shopping locally has deep and far-reaching benefits to our community and economy.
