The Glacier Bears varsity volleyball team competed in the south seeding tournament in Craig last weekend.

Teams from Wrangell, Petersburg, Skagway, Klawock, Metlakatla and Craig competed.

Coach Katie Dickerson said her team did well, despite competing in a fairly competitive bracket. The Craig Panthers, who won the state championship in 2016, placed first in the tournament with a 6-0 record.

“We’ve made a lot of improvements in the past few weeks, which was noted by several of the other coaches this weekend,” Dickerson said of her eight-girl team.

Senior Marissa Haddock was the team’s defensive specialist in Craig. Dickerson said, “She won all-tourney at Juneau JIVE (Juneau Invitational Volleyball Extravaganza) and she again was a stand-out player.”

Front-row hitters Becca Wheeler and Willow Oakley had several kills.

The seeding tournament marked the third competition of the season for the Glacier Bears, who played in the Juneau JIVE and a small Haines invitational tournament already this season. Haines placed 9th out of 10 schools, beating out Ketchikan in the Juneau invitational, and second out of three teams in their home competition.

“Playing schools that are much larger than ours is definitely more of a struggle but playing schools that are tough really helped our girls improve,” Dickerson said.

She said her team is looking to improve their serving accuracy and court coverage this season. “I think if we get those things down we’ll be competitive in our region,” Dickerson said.

The north seeding tournament will be on Nov. 2 and 3 in Petersburg. Final seeding results will be used to develop the schedule for the regional tournament in Metlakatla on Nov. 16 and 17.
