Haines High School hosted the first Drama, Debate and Forensics (DDF) tournament of the season Oct. 13, with the Glacier Bards placing in six events.

“Typically, first tournaments are a bit more like practice, they’re still allowed to have their scripts, which moving forward they are not,” said coach Hannah Bochart.

The Haines DDF team only competed in the drama portion of this tournament.

Students Tanna Dixon and Max White placed second in duet acting with a scene from “Rabbit Hole,” a play by David Lindsay-Abaire.

White, the team’s only senior, has competed on DDF for four years. “We’re really proud of this performance, even though we didn’t practice that much,” White said of the duo. White also placed third in a dramatic interpretation of literature.

Hannah Boron, a sophomore and first-year member of the speech team, placed third with her solo performance, “The Audition.” “My character is this woman who walks up on stage to audition and she’s very nervous, and instead of auditioning she tries to take off all her clothes or to kill a cat,” Boron said. Boron said she was initially nervous to perform, but said that once she saw other students’ equally weird and funny presentations, she felt comfortable.

Eli Williamson and Nathan Haas each reached finals for their humorous interpretations. Hannah Boron and Stella Ordonez came in fourth place for their duet.

Ketchikan, Juneau, Sitka, and Skagway schools competed in the event. Mount Edgecumbe was set to participate, but didn’t attend because of weather.

The next competition is Nov. 2-3 in Juneau. Coach Bochart said her focus moving forward will be on polishing her team’s performances and working together, which will happen as the team begins traveling together.
