A few points about the landfill debate:

1. Government should not be forcing a private business out of business and people out of their livelihoods. Government should buy that business if they really want to get into that business.

2. If the borough thought there were problems at the landfill, the borough should have contacted the Department of Environmental Conservation. Did they? No. That seems to me (and I’m an expert on big borough staff errors) a big error by borough staff. Sounded to me like the DEC was surprised they hadn’t been contacted. So, on the basis of a surprise inspection by people with no training or education in the field they decide to spend taxpayer dollars on new infrastructure and run someone out of business.

3. Finally. Guess what? Take away Community Waste Solution’s business and they will probably fail. Can’t compete with the government, you know. So, what happens to the landfill? It will go into foreclosure and the borough will assume ownership. If you want that then fine. Buy it. If not, report any problems to DEC and let them and CWS work through them.
