Haines High School track practice is canceled until a head coach is hired.

Activities director Tiana Taylor said the position is advertised, but the team can’t hold official practices until a coach steps up.

Taylor said it’s not the first time teams have been without a coach.

“It always hard to find coaches,” Taylor said. “It’s a hard job with little pay and it’s a big time-commitment.”

She said the track team of about 20 students must practice at least 10 times before they can compete. Taylor said it’s ok for the team to miss a meet, but she wants the students to be prepared for their home meet in early May and other competitions later in the season.

“I would hate to cancel the season now, but show up at regionals,” Taylor said.

Since posting the vacant job on the Haines Glacier Bear Facebook page, Taylor said a few people have expressed interested in the position but the school has yet to make a hire.
