A Haines man previously charged with felony theft, leaving the scene of an accident, and domestic violence assault is now facing a federal felony indictment in connection with the assault charge.
During that case last October, Haines Police searched the man’s vehicle where they found 19 grams of methamphetamine, along with a loaded handgun magazine and two loaded pistols in the center console and a loaded AR 15 style assault rifle in the back seat, according to court documents. Police also found three homemade silencers in the man’s home.
The man was convicted in 1992 in Washington for possession of stolen property.
United States Attorney Jack Schmidt filed the March 21 indictment that charges the man with being a felon in possession of a firearm, a felony charge with a 10-year maximum sentence. The man has not been charged for the methamphetamine or the silencers.
“As for the drugs and silencers, I can’t really comment, only to say that he is currently under investigation for other offenses related to his current charges,” Schmidt said.
Local police most recently arrested the man in February after responding to a report of trailer theft, according to court documents.
The owner reported to police that a friend working for the Alaska Department of Transportation called him to ask if he’d sold his trailer, after seeing it towed down the highway by a green truck driven by the suspect, court documents say.
Police also charged the man last November after he allegedly crashed his car into a Delta Western truck and left the scene without reporting the accident last July, despite causing more than $10,000 in damage.
The man told police he didn’t know why his vehicle was damaged, but that he “woke up to find the damaged (vehicle) and that he moved it to its current location,” charging documents state.
The man is currently being held at Lemon Creek Correctional Facility.
