I write in support of the Haines Sheldon Museum. This amazing borough facility is an often overlooked gem in our community. From being the repository of our local history, to providing many programs for the children and public alike, to providing space for artists to display their work, this museum gives opportunities to all of us for growth and learning. I was impressed by the new displays representing a more balanced view of history with native culture given the importance it deserves.
As an artist and guest curator of shows at the museum for the last three summers, including the Portrait Society of America Alaskan Members Show this past summer, I think we are blessed to have a space where art can be displayed in a professional manner, and artists can add this accredited venue to their professional resumes. With a jury process for the six-week spotlight shows, this venue offers artists in all stages of their creative careers a chance to apply for and receive a solo show or participate in group shows. Through the Rasmuson Foundation museum acquisition grants, local artists are also able to submit works for possible purchase for the collection, which has helped any number of local artists buy their groceries.
In times of increasing costs and growing collections of artifacts, I hope the borough assembly will consider funding the museum at the highest possible level. It is an investment that pays back to the community in a multitude of ways.
