Families played games and had a feast with teachers and staff at the Healthy Living Family Fun Night Thursday.
Family Fun night, in its inaugural year, is an event put together by school faculty and the School Advisory Council with the goal of building stronger relationships among teachers and parents and creating a stronger community within the school.
Thursday’s event was the second Family Fun Night of the school year. The first theme was a Science Night and last week’s was Healthy Living. The event featured Zumba, smoothie making and rock climbing, along with other games and activities specific to advancing the health of the body and mind while teambuilding. Volunteers from SEARHC were there to educate participants.
“We place high value on parents and teachers teaming together to provide for a child’s education,” said advisory council member Pamela Long. She said that it is significant to her, being a parent and a member of the community, that the instructors and staff “put all the time and thoughtfulness into this event. It truly shows how much they care about our students and their families.”
Advisory council members enjoy planning these types of functions. As Long said, “Other events we have sponsored have been “Love & Logic” parent seminars, a middle school student survey, teacher appreciation week, and other celebrations at the school.”
Long said the advisory council is always looking for new members who have an interest in the school.
“We are a liaison with the school board, have participated in superintendent hire processes, and present topics of interest from parents and students to be discussed at staff meetings. We invite topics of interest to be discussed at our monthly round-table meetings that are open to the public.”
