A caller reported an unattended truck parked on Second Avenue sliding on the ice and rotating up onto the sidewalk. Police contacted the owner, who moved the truck.

Police supervised a man as he collected personal belongings from his residence on Fourth Avenue. The man and his wife are involved in an ongoing domestic violence case.

A civil suit regarding unpaid rent was received by police to be served on a tenant in the Eagle’s Nest trailer park.

A caller reported a flashlight-wielding intruder in an absent neighbor’s home in the Young Road area. Police responded and concluded an authorized yoga class was occurring and the neighbor had seen someone wearing a headlamp.

A Small Tracts Road resident reported loud noises sounding like something being ripped apart on his property. Police responded and found a neighboring business using a backhoe.

Sunday, Jan. 6

A caller reported loud music on Mount Riley Road around 12:30 a.m. A group of people were partying outside. Police responded and the party-goers promised to turn the music down.

A Beach Road resident reported smoke in the area. Fire volunteers responded, and discovered another area resident was burning brush.

Police arrested a man on domestic violence charges at a Fourth Avenue residence. The man’s wife called to report she had been assaulted. Police arrived and attempted to contact the man, who tried to move to the back of the residence where officers thought he might have a gun. Police used a Taser to subdue the man, who spent the night in jail.

A Mathias Avenue resident reported intruders entering her downstairs apartment and stealing things. Police advised they would perform extra patrols.

Saturday, Jan. 5

An earthquake was felt in Haines and a tsunami warning issued for the Southeast Alaska coastline. The assistant harbormaster and fire chief went down to the harbor to observe wave activity.

Fire department personnel responded to a Small Tracts Road residence that had two sounding carbon monoxide alarms.

A caregiver reported a woman on hospice care living in the Dusty Trails apartment complex had died.

A caller reported a reckless driver swerving near Allen Road and Haines Highway. Troopers located the vehicle and determined the driver was not impaired.

Traffic stops resulted in four citations for failure to provide proof of insurance and expired registration, and four verbal warnings for no headlight, no taillight, defective muffler, reckless driving and excessive speed.

Friday, Jan. 4

Police assisted with a vehicle that had slid into a ditch on Mud Bay Road. A friend of the driver pulled the vehicle out.

An officer on patrol observed an open door at a residence on Deishu Drive. Police contacted the owner and determined the wind had blown open the door.

A called reported a plow truck had slid into a ditch on Small Tracts Road. Police assisted with traffic control while the plow truck was removed.

A caller with a protective order against her requested assistance retrieving personal belongings from a residence in town. Police did not assist, as they had already escorted her to the residence once.

A Mathias Avenue resident requested police investigate for a possible intruder. Police found nothing suspicious.

A vehicle accident occurred in the parking lot of the Dusty Trails apartment complex. No report was filed.

A traffic stop resulted in a verbal warning for a defective headlight.

Thursday, Jan. 3

A caller reported water on Main Street resulting from a leak of some sort. Public works was aware of the issue.

Troopers responded to a call at 18 Mile Haines Highway for a moose that had been caught in a snare and killed. A charity responded to collect the moose.

A caller reported hearing yelling and loud noises at a residence in the upper Young Road area and said it was an ongoing occurrence. Police responded and contacted residents, but found nothing amiss.

Traffic stops resulted in two citations for driving without a valid license and failure to provide proof of insurance, and three verbal warnings for lack of registration, failure to provide proof of insurance and driving outside the lane.

Wednesday, Jan. 2

A Main Street business owner reported a male customer had called and threatened her over a dispute concerning his bill. The man claimed to have paid the bill, but the business owner had no record of the transaction. The incident was recorded.

A caller in the Highland Drive and Muncaster Road area reported a constant low hum. Police determined the noise to be a neighbor’s lights.

Traffic stops resulted in two verbal warnings for a defective taillight and negligent driving.

Tuesday, Jan. 1

A caller in the Eagle’s Nest trailer park reported hearing gunshots nearby. Police were unable to locate the source of the sounds.

A vehicle slid off the road and into the snow on Mud Bay Road. The driver was able to get assistance from a friend.

A caller reported the stretch of highway between Klukwan and 10 Mile Haines Highway was extremely icy and requested sanding. State road crews were advised.

Traffic stops resulted in verbal warnings for failure to stop at a stop sign, expired registration, defective taillight and no headlight.

Monday, Dec. 31

Police assisted a vehicle owner whose car broke down at 4 Mile Haines Highway. The car was towed.

A caller on Comstock Road and Allen Road reported hearing fireworks. Police responded but found no evidence of fireworks.

Traffic stops resulted in two verbal warnings for expired registration.

Sunday, Dec. 30

A woman reported someone had hit her vehicle causing what she estimated to be $1,500 in damages. She believed the incident occurred while she was parked on Main Street. Police filed a hit-and-run report.

An anonymous caller reported a juvenile female’s intention of attending a drinking party with her boyfriend and no chaperone. The caller could not provide a location.

Traffic stops resulted in two verbal warnings for failure to stop at a stop sign and exceeding posted speed.

Saturday, Dec. 29

A man requested assistance accessing a residence where he was staying on Lynnview Drive. He was advised police would not be able to assist. The man stated he would be talking to the Legislature about the incident.

A caller reported seeing a woman pick up a child and “slam” her down on the pavement on Fourth Avenue. The child was crying. Police responded and later located the woman, but determined there was no wrongdoing.

A man requested police respond to his Small Tracts Road residence regarding a domestic dispute. The man had gotten into an argument with a woman, but by the time police responded, the woman had left. Police advised the caller to obtain a protective order.

Traffic stops resulted in two verbal warnings for failure to come to a complete stop at a stop sign.

Friday, Dec. 28

A woman reported observing unusual lights in the sky over Fort Seward. An officer on patrol had seen similar strange lights and upon investigating learned people were releasing Chinese lanterns.

A Main Street business owner reported a vehicle parked more than an hour in a one-hour parking spot. Police located the owner, who moved the vehicle.

Traffic stops resulted in two citations for driving with a revoked license and failure to provide proof of insurance and three verbal warnings for a defective taillight and failure to stop at a stop sign.

Thursday, Dec. 27

A caller reported a large tanker truck parked on the highway, creating a traffic hazard in front of Delta Western. The truck moved by the time police responded.

A resident reported hearing two gunshots in the area of Lynnview Drive and Young Road. Police patrolled the area but heard no further shots.

Traffic stops resulted in verbal warnings for expired registration and no headlight.

Wednesday, Dec. 26

A caller on Comstock Road and Allen Road requested sand be put down. State road crews were notified.

A resident at a local motel reported someone had damaged his car’s bumper in the motel parking lot. Police filed an accident report.

A caller reported 15 rounds of fireworks sounding from the Fort Seward area. Police responded but found no fireworks.

Traffic stops resulted in 11 verbal warnings for failure to come to a complete stop at a stop sign.

Tuesday, Dec. 25

A caller reported hearing a gunshot in the area of Lynnview Drive and Union Street. Police patrolled the area but heard no further gunshots.

Monday, Dec. 24

A caller reported litter on Mud Bay Road near the drinking water spring. Police responded but found no trash.

A vehicle backed into a parked vehicle causing minor damage in a parking lot at Third Avenue and Haines Highway. Police completed a report.

A woman reported a violation of a protective order when a man texted a blank text to her phone. Police investigated, and the man reported the text was accidental.

Sunday, Dec. 23

A man locked himself out of his rental car on Mud Bay Road and requested assistance. He was later able to contact the rental company to assist with unlocking the car.

Several callers on Mud Bay Road near Letnikof Cove reported a man cutting a tree and leaving debris in the roadway. Police forwarded the call to troopers.

An anonymous caller reported a drunk driver in the Mosquito Lake vicinity. The call was forwarded to troopers.

Saturday, Dec. 22

A citizen reported a vehicle ran a stop sign and was disturbing the peace near Second Avenue and Haines Highway. An officer could not locate the vehicle.

Two vehicles were reported broken down on Third Avenue and Haines Highway. One vehicle had stopped to help the other and both moved on.

Friday, Dec. 21

A caller reported a neighbor’s roof tin was being blown off by the wind and that he was going to attempt to have it replaced as she is out of town.

A caller on Deishu Drive reported a neighbor’s motion detection light was blinking on and off. Police investigated but found nothing amiss.

Thursday, Dec. 20

A borough plow truck hit a parked car in the Fort Seward area and caused damage in excess of $500. No citations were issued and a report was filed.

A dead moose was reported at 24 Mile Haines Highway, apparently killed by a vehicle. The meat was salvaged for a charity.

A suspected drunk driver was reported on Small Tracts Road, stepping on his brakes repeatedly. Police couldn’t locate the driver.

Wednesday, Dec. 19

Police assisted a female driver in the post office parking lot whose car’s locks and doors had frozen shut with the engine running.

A caller complained snow berms being deliberately deposited in front of a Main Street business driveway. She was advised plows do not clear berms from driveways. State road crews were advised.

Tuesday, Dec. 18

A juvenile was reported missing but was located within 15 minutes by the guardian.

A parent requested a welfare check on her daughter who had not shown up at school. Police determined the daughter was fine but had stayed home sick.

A ministerial adviser requested a welfare check on a client who did not answer the door. Police contacted the client, who had been in the shower.

Dispatch received 27 medical calls and four canine calls.
