Haines’ adult softball league is looking for more co-ed players this summer to ramp up teams for a busy tournament season.
Coordinator Tyrell Horton said the group will start games 6:30 p.m. every Thursday starting on May 25, but needs more players to form official teams for tournaments.
“Anyone who wants to come, we have extra gear, gloves and bats,” Horton said. The group uses 16-inch men’s softballs but also has some 12-inch balls for fast pitch games. “Depending on participation, we’d really like to play Thursdays and Saturdays,” Horton said.

The league is set to play each Thursday on the field near the skate park through August. Horton said he and co-coordinator Daniel Klanott would like to play in several tournaments this summer, including ones in Whitehorse, Dawson, Juneau, Skagway and Sitka.
He said most players last year were men, but women are welcome and encouraged to play to form co-ed teams. Horton said if participation by women increases, he will organize a work group to maintain the women’s field near 1 Mile Haines Highway.
For youths, Community Youth Development’s summer T-Ball League starts Monday and is open to students in grades K-6. Call Liam Cassidy at 314-0715.
