Haines School students are gearing up for the final concerts of the school year in May.

Grades 5-12 will take the stage at the Chilkat Center on Tuesday, May 9, with grades K-4 following on May 10.

Music director Jason Muccino said soloists who sang at the recent music festival in Sitka will perform again. Fifth graders in beginner band, sixth-grade band, seventh- and eighth-grade-band as well as concert choir, men’s choir and jazz band all will perform.

Muccino said the men’s choir has focused on barbershop-style music this year and will perform several popular pieces. The seventh- and eighth-grade band has also been working on the jazz tune “East Side Drive.”

“Putting performances on can be stressful, but it’s been enjoyable with these wonderful kids,” Muccino said.

Elementary music teacher Jennifer Johnson said elementary school students have been practicing during music class and are excited for a performance on the big stage.

Some song selections will come from popular television shows and movies like Charlie Brown, Monsters, Inc. and Spiderman, with a recorder performance from third and fourth graders and a “special light show” as the grand finale.

“The closer it gets the more excited they get,” Johnson said. “It should really be an inspiring concert.”
