In harmony with this winter’s lowest temperatures, the Haines Community Youth Development basketball teams traveled to Juneau last weekend for the annual Icebreaker basketball tournament.
The boys’ team, playing in the “A” bracket, was knocked out in the semifinal round and finished the tournament with a 2-2 record.
Boys’ coach Kyle Fossman was pleased with the trip and what he saw from his players.
“It was great that we got to play in the ‘A’ bracket because the competition in all the games was so good,” Fossman said. “Plus, the kids’ passion for the game really showed through this weekend and that’s what makes it fun as a coach.”
The girls’ team, playing in the “B” bracket, also made it to the semifinal round before being knocked out. They finished the tournament with a 3-2 record.
Girls’ coach Lori Giddings said the team met expectations as far as on-court performance against the larger teams from Juneau, and added, “they exceeded expectations in terms of attitude and hustle. So, it was good overall.”
Individually, Mark Davis and Carson Crager were recognized for all-tournament selection on the boys’ side, and Haley Boron earned the same recognition on the girls’ side.
Next up for the CYD league is the Triple Threat Tournament in Haines on Feb. 3-5.
