Haines-Skagway hunters shot 26 moose in the recently finished season – one above the Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s target of 25.

Subsistence moose season for Unit 1D ended two weeks early on Sept. 21 because of the high harvest count. However, 2016 is not a record year with about 30 being harvested in 2008, said Carl Koch, wildlife biologist of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

The 26 moose total included 15 with three brow tines, two with racks of more than 50 inches, six with spike forks and three of sub-legal size.

The state has not yet crunched its data to see why this year’s harvest was high, Koch said. About 250 people obtained permits to hunt moose in this area.
