The Alaska Department of Fish and Game closed the mountain goat hunting season for two segments of the Takshanuk Mountain Range earlier this week.
One affected area that is part of the Unit 1D is north and east of the Haines Highway and Chilkat River, west of the Chilkoot River and Lake, and north to Goat Hollow.
As of Monday, four male goats worth one point each and two female goats worth two points each had been harvested in this area. The state’s harvest target is eight or nine points, with the eight-point target being reached on Monday.
The second affected area is to resident youth goat hunting in the RG025 hunt area. That is the portion of the Takshanuk Mountains from the northwestern saddle of Mount Tukgahgo to downtown Haines.
The limit for that area is three points – counting two points for a female and one point for a male. As of Tuesday, two female goats – accounting for four points – had been harvested.
The remaining Unit 1D mountain goat seasons, other than those previously closed by emergency order, are not affected by these orders.
