Since May 1, Janet Hayes has been operating her clothing store, La Loft, at the corner of Second Avenue and Main Street.
Hayes, a six-year resident of Haines who used to be a preschool teacher, bought, the business from previous owner Alyssa Henry. “This opportunity came up and it seemed too good to pass,” Hayes said.
The transition from the previous business, Lost Coast Shop, was quick and “seamless,” she said. “Before I was even open, the (La Loft) sign was up,” Hayes said.
Like Lost Coast, La Loft sells new and used women’s clothing from brands Prana and Bogs Footwear, as well as local designers Shyine Designs and 907 Clothing Company. The store has changed little under her ownership, Hayes said, except that she has expanded its merchandise to include plus-size garments.
Aside from La Loft, when it comes to large sizes, “there’s nothing available in town,” said Hayes. “It’s very, very limited.”
Hayes carries new and used women’s clothing, including “shelf pulls”—products from name brand stores, out of season or discontinued at low prices.
Customers can also bring used clothes to the store, and they receive 50 percent of the proceeds if the garments sell, with the option of receiving their cut in cash or store credit.
“Clothing at affordable options is my main goal,” she said.
Hayes runs the store herself with part-time help from Marissa Haddock, a student at the local high school. She only takes one day off a week. “It’s a little bit tiring,” Hayes said.
The store is open 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., seven days a week. Call 303-0031.
