Dear Editor (whoever you are these days):
I went to the harbor this past Friday and Saturday, Labor Day weekend. Beautiful weather. Holiday weekend. And guess what, there’s 15 to 20 empty boat slips. You could’ve parked 50 or more cars in the empty places in the parking spots.
The harbor expansion project is a scam. Don’t believe me? Drive by and see the empty slips for yourself. I used to work there. There’s not one single boat waiting to use Haines harbor. There’s a few waiting for a slip in their own name, and they expect the state to kick down $37 million to make that happen, plus maintenance and replacement costs.
Unfortunately, they have the most liberal spending assembly in the history of Haines on their side. They want to add an $18 million (at least) I.O.U. to our bottom line, and allow Lutak Dock to crumple. That is going to cost $15 million to $30 million to fix, and is probably going to kill the poor forklift driver when it does. Apparently, nothing can be done about this, but I want it on the record that I am against going broke and killing people.
