The Haines Borough Assembly decided to ask due diligence to leave the room; no cost benefit analysis, a fake waiting list, no public referendum, and no real means of getting the additional $10 million to finish the project, and voted to put in the giant seawall across the face of Portage Cove. That’s the facts.
I can’t express my opinion of this because I get too upset. So the bottom line is we will need a name for the monstrosity that is coming. Here are some suggestions: The Grey Monster (kind of like the left field wall of Boston’s baseball field, the Green Monster), The Giant Tombstone, Flat Mountain, The Shadow Maker, Crabbie’s Climbing Wall, Steelzilla, Turner’s Tower (in honor of both Don Turners, who pushed it through), Stormin’ Norman’s Steel Erector Set (in honor of Norm Hughes, chairman of the Port and Harbor Advisory Committee and a big factor in all this), T-BUT (short for The Big Ugly Thing) and finally, Lust for Rust. If you have ideas for the name of the coming monstrosity we don’t need and can’t afford to maintain, or replace when it dies, I am all ears.
