Months after Haines Borough Mayor Jan Hill referred to the community as the most “hateful and vindictive” as she has seen it during her lifetime, Hill repeated her call this week for the town to turn over a new leaf regarding its outlook and attitudes.

Hill said she was inspired by the energy the Freeride World Tour competitors and organizers brought to town last week.

“The energy that I feel our Freeride guys brought to town, they drop a lot of money here and they enjoy what we have and they enjoy that we share it with them,” she said. “And I would like that energy to stay in each of us.”

“I think that as we are getting ready to go into our spring and summer seasons — which are very, very busy — I would just like us to enjoy getting out in the fresh air. I’m hoping it helps us change attitudes. We got a little crazy this winter, all of us,” Hill added.

Hill urged the community to “celebrate (the) new activities and new energy in our valley.”
