Senior Kayley Swinton poured in 36 points to pace the Haines High School girls in a 55-49 victory over Wrangell last Friday.

Swinton shot a torrid 5-for-9 from 3-point range. Senior Destinee Cowart added 5 points and grabbed 15 rebounds.

The host Wolves rebounded to erase an early deficit and pick up a win the following night, 52-50.

Scoring for Haines included Swinton, 17; Cowart, 10; senior Autumn Gross and sophomore Makayla Crager, 6; senior Jenae Larson, 5; sophomore Brittney Bradford, 4; and sophomore Tulsi Zahnow, 2.

Coach Greg Brittenham said Larson’s six assists likely were a season-high for the team, and the Glacier Bears fought through injuries and foul trouble to combine for a whopping 84 rebounds during the two games.

“That’s just insane for us,” Brittenham said of the rebounding total. “That’s our biggest stat.”

The Glacier Bear girls also stopped in Petersburg on their way to Wrangell, for a Thursday match-up with the Vikings. Petersburg took a 55-31 win. Swinton tallied 12 points and Bradford scored 10.

Brittenham said Bradford’s attacking play was an example for the team. “She was the one taking the ball to the hoop and getting fouled.”

The Glacier Bear boys hosted Wrangell last weekend and went winless in the four JV and varsity contests.

Senior Trevor Cox scored 20 points in a 67-41 varsity loss on Friday. Sophomore Hudson Sage had 8 points; sophomore Dylan Swinton, 7; junior Jacob Stigen, 4; and senior Matthew Green, 2.

Haines slowed the tempo a bit the second night and trimmed the final margin to 53-37. Scoring totals were Cox, 15; Sage, 11; Swinton, 8; Stigen, 2; and Green, 1.

The Haines boys and girls will be at home this weekend for a conference series against Metlakatla that will feature Senior Night festivities.
