Progress is moving ahead on the Haines pool sauna project.

Under current planning, the dry sauna will be about eight feet square and will be constructed in the northwest corner of the pool’s laundry room.

Plans call for creating a new entrance from the room to the pool deck. The room’s existing doorway would become a portal to a window in the sauna, allowing lifeguards to check on those inside while remaining on the pool deck.

Major expenses of the project are expected to be electrical work and installation of a sauna floor drain.

The sauna structure, including benches, walls and heater, is projected to cost roughly $4,000 and will come as a kit from Finlandia, a Portland, Ore.-based company specializing in commercial saunas.

Organizers have raised about $8,500 in community donations for the project. A tentative construction timetable aims for completion during a scheduled pool closure in May, or sooner.
