Less than half the registered voters vote in Haines. Unless people are affected directly, they become apathetic toward any changes in laws or ordinances. They live in their own world and choose to not get involved. They are like the frog that is slowly warmed up in water on the stove; as the temperature rises he is not aware of the temperature change until it is too late and he boils to death.
The people of Haines should decide their own future, not outside influences. We spend thousands of dollars on studies from experts to determine what is best for Haines. It is real simple. Let’s learn to live by the “Golden Rule,” and solve our individual problems out of court.
We can start by being more self-reliant. Rather than waiting for the state and federal government to bail us out, we can be much more innovative. Let’s start by weeding out unnecessary ordinances. Also a worthwhile project to put on the table would be a borough-owned ferry system or have private enterprise step to the plate.
