The Haines Borough’s Public Safety Commission will meet in assembly chambers 5 p.m. Monday after a nearly four-month hiatus.
The commission has a slew of topics to tackle, including the controversial minor offenses ordinance that would establish a fee schedule for minor violations.
Commission chair Jim Stanford said he has asked to receive an update on the status of the police chief hiring process. “Everybody is asking, ‘What the hell is going on?’” Stanford said this week.
The commission will also review the $22,000 police department study conducted by Russell Consulting, which the borough expects to release later this week.
Stanford said there was supposed to be a community survey component to the study and the commission was to help craft the questions. Stanford has received no news on the survey. “We’ve been told nothing,” he said.
At the request of the Planning Commission chair, the safety commission will also discuss the speed limit on Lower Mud Bad Road and Small Tracts Road. The issue arose at last month’s planning commission meeting when citizens submitted a petition asking the speed limit be reduced from 30 to 20 mph.
The commission will also discuss staffing and procedural needs of the police and fire department.
