Haines Friends of Recycling collected more than 30 tons of scrap metal during its annual collection event July 17-18, according to group president Melissa Aronson.
“The amount was definitely up (from previous years),” said Aronson, attributing the increase to a simultaneous hazardous waste collection event sponsored by the Haines Borough. “We spoke to a lot of people who’d just dropped off their hazmats. I think it made for a big cleanup adventure for a lot of people.”
The volume of washers and dryers was close to double last year’s amount, Aronson said. Volume was boosted by metal junk from a Jones Point cleanup and the remains of a house fire. “Every year what we get is different,” Aronson said.
She said 25-30 volunteers helped out at the event.
