The Haines Borough school board is scheduled to make a decision on its “Engaging the Future” computer initiative Tuesday, June 2. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. in the school library and will include an executive session to evaluate superintendent Ginger Jewell.
The district currently spends roughly $30,000 annually for student and teacher computers, including replacement costs.
At a workshop this week, board members discussed an option that would add 35 computers to the school next year and several “Smartboards.” The option would cost $95,000 the first year and $40,000 additionally for the following two years, according to rough estimates provided by staff.
The option provide shared iPads for grades K-2, shared iPads and computers for grades 3-4 and laptops starting in grade 5.
Board members Sarah Swinton and Tiffany DeWitt expressed skepticism about the plan, but others voiced support, including member Lisa Schwartz. “I can go with this. I really can. I have an eighth-grade daughter and it would be great if this could really engage her,” Schwartz said.
DeWitt said she supports use of computers starting in fourth grade, but questions their use in lower grades. Swinton questioned whether the district would be able to afford the costs of a districtwide program.
“With state funding how it is, I’m more comfortable with small steps than jumping in with both feet,” she said after the meeting.
Member Mike Wilson said he was encouraged by staff enthusiasm for the initiative. “We have a group of committed people who want and can move this forward.”
Other members expressed the expectation that student time on computers would be kept track of.
Action on the school budget has been delayed by the Alaska Legislature’s failure to set school funding levels.
