Members of the Haines-based North Tide Canoe Kwaan, from left James Hart, Zach James, Ted Hart and Nels Lynch come ashore at Juneau’s Marine Park May 15. Their arrival was part of the celebration of Sealaska Heritage Institute’s new Walter Soboleff Center. James Hart said he felt honored to represent Natives in Southeast. “It felt like being a part of history.” The ceremony included a “calling in” of the vessel by elders. Their dugout canoe voyage from Haines to Juneau included use of a traditional-shaped sail between Maab and Coughlin islands. “There were whitecaps out there. We pushed through no problem,” Hart said.
