On April 28, the assembly introduced the manager’s proposed budget for 2016. This budget will set the borough’s direction for its activities during 2016. The assembly has reviewed it during the last few weeks, and now it is time for the public to weigh in with their thoughts. Public hearings on it will take place over the next month.
A large budget such as this can be intimidating and hard to follow. But it is important that you take the time to review the package and dig into the details to understand how we are proposing to spend your money. Does the budget reflect the values and needs of the community? Does it move us in a desired direction? Are important programs and services adequately funded?
Budgets are about dollars, but more importantly they are about sending resources to set the direction for the borough over the next year and beyond. Many items in the budget may seem pretty routine, and some may be more controversial. Look it over carefully, ask questions, and let your assembly know of your thoughts by emails, calls or by attending the public hearings over the next month. The budget is available on the borough website. We need your thoughts. If you don’t comment, who will?
