Is this the best we can do for our community – build a huge parking lot/boat storage on our fabulous shoreline drive? Enhancing our community as a visitor destination helps bring in money to all parts of our economy. Our natural waterfronts and beach areas are an important draw to visitors of all sorts. Can we not enhance our central waterfront into something that is in itself part of the Haines attraction? Instead, for $19 million we get a deeper channel, a lot of sludge, a baffle that will only last 50 years at best as long as we re-zinc it, and a three-acre parking lot, but no harbor facilities.
