We have had poor king salmon returns for the last seven years. The return of kings in 1997 was 8,100. In 2014, it was 1,534. This year sport fishing is closed in Chilkat Inlet, as it should be. But the Haines biologist is going to let subsistence nets still fish king salmon on the Chilkat side. Biologists say they see reports of only a small amount of king salmon caught in subsistence nets. I think they have their heads in the sand. Fish and Game raised the bag limit for sport fish-caught kings to three last year and we got one of our worst returns. Would king salmon be worse off without the Haines biologist? It looks doubtful to me. If you are interested in Chilkat king salmon, call Randy Bachman at 766-2830.
