Audience members should expect a polished production when young actors take to the stage this weekend to present the comedy “Puss n’ Boots.” Shows are at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Chilkat Center.
Guest director Dr. Stanley Coleman said he and assistant director Bill Winkley taught actors how to project their voices by making each stand at the back of the theater when others were delivering their lines, signaling when lines weren’t clear or loud enough.
“We spent a bit of time on vocal projection and annunciation. That’s all in the training, We’ve seen phenomenal growth in these kids,” Coleman said.
Actors had their lines memorized after the second week of rehearsals. “That gave us the luxury of just running the show this week,” Coleman said.
The show is a play within a play, with character portraying members of a gypsy theater troupe presenting “Puss n’ Boots.” The storyline follows the adventures of a cat who uses cunning to advance the fortunes of its master. Coleman said he chose the show because he guessed it would be fun for young actors and audience members.
Actors include Yzella Miramontes as Puss, Dominic Stossel as Scaramouche, Logan Borcik as Punchin, Naomi Green as the Queen, Matilda Rogers as Rosetta, Aurora Alten-Huber as Arlequin and Brandt Alten-Huber as Ogre.
Aurora Alten-Huber, 12, said audiences will enjoy costumes and comedy and will appreciate the group’s dedication. “Everybody in it has worked very hard. I think it’s very good. It’s funny.”
About 18 youths ages 6 to 13 participated in the conservatory this year. Younger actors, who have attended “playmaking” sessions at the theater camp, will play minor characters and sing and dance to introduce the show.
Director Coleman said parents and community members have shown support. “Three different businesses offered to run our concession. We’ve had great, great support. That’s helped to make the program solid.”
