If the Mayor believes “there is no amount of money that is worth community cohesion,” why then did she feel it necessary to publicly disparage Lynn Canal Conservation’s efforts last year to bring speakers to town to discuss mining issues? It seems especially odd, since she now appears ready to follow suit, but from what she considers to be a better perspective and at a proposed cost of $20,000.

The Mayor has the right to any opinion she may have about mining or other issues that affect Haines – even to directly oppose LCC’s stated mission: To promote ecosystem integrity, protect quality of life and foster environmental awareness in northern Southeast Alaska. But – especially for “community cohesion’s” sake – she should state her opinions without discounting the efforts of people or groups who may have a different perspective.
