I follow with interest Joe Parnell’s column, and I got a laugh out of the advice he got on his way to Alaska, about fighting off the bears with a two-sided ax. Actually, it is called a “double-bitted axe.” It was not designed that way to fight off bears, when you run out of ammo. I suppose that you could, though. Actually, it was designed with two blades so you could cut down two trees at the same time. That is what the old-timers in Haines told me when I was a little kid, and embarking on a new career on the family woodpile.
