A former Haines resident this week launched a crowd-sourcing effort to support his new model for health care.
Orion Falvey, a 2008 Haines High School graduate, said he’s been working on his membership-based model for more than a year. Orchid Health is designed for communities with small populations, and will be tried in Oakridge, Ore., a town without health care that is opening a primary-care clinic staffed with nurse practitioners.
Under Orchid’s model, members pay $50 per month for unlimited coverage, but keep their high-deductible, catastrophic coverage. “It’s about separating everyday health needs from catastrophic care,” he said.
Orchid is seeking individual, family and business members in the Oakridge area.

Orion recently graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in Business Administration and a focus in Entrepreneurship. While attending school he initiated and led a number of projects including a proposal to erect flagpoles honoring Oregon’s Native American Tribes at the center of his college campus.
Additionally he has served as a consultant for several local businesses, and was a Freeman Fellow last winter while working with a local non-governmental organization in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
He was recently named the 2013 Oregon Student Impact Entrepreneur of the Year by Portland State University’s Impact Entrepreneurs program.
