Alaska Rod’s is putting a Haines spin on the Red Cross’s “Holiday Mail for Heroes” program by collecting a box full of holiday cards from residents to be sent to military service members around the world.
Rhonda Hinson said she learned about the program through Facebook and decided she would try to collect enough cards by the end of the month to fill a large, flat-rate box.
“People can just write inside whatever they want to say to the troops: thanking them for their service, or wishing them a Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukah,” Hinson said.
“It’s so they can have a holiday and know that we are thinking about them,” she added.
People can drop off cards in the box at Alaska Rod’s until Nov. 29.
The Red Cross outlines several guidelines for the cards on their website, including that all cards should be signed and use generic salutations like “Dear service member.”
