Classes started Monday at Klukwan School with 14 students enrolled, including five in the high school.
Enrollment is down two students, due to the departure of one family, said head teacher Cynthia McFeeters. “The first day of school was great.”
For the first day the whole school gathered together to get to know one another, participate in group activities and discuss what they did over summer break. “They’re a close-knit group,” McFeeters said.
The school has plans for activities throughout the year. “Every year we try to plan something different,” McFeeters said. Salmon camp is next week, where the school learns to cut fish and prepare it for canning. They also want to take a field trip to Juneau for skiing.
On the academic side, the school was able to get new math and science textbooks and materials for all the grades, which closely follow the common core of academic standards recently established by the state.
McFeeters is joined at the school by Carson Buck, who teaches at the middle school and high school levels.
