The annual household hazardous waste collection event will be held 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, July 19 at the old city shop on Union Street at Sixth Avenue.
About 150 residents typically stop by with old paints, cleaning products and tins of mystery goo.
“Every year we have people lined up before 8 a.m.,” said Steve Haavig, who oversees the event for Juneau’s Carson Dorn, the contractor coordinating the event. “Haines always has a great turnout.”
The borough has budgeted $18,500 said Jila Stuart, the municpality’s chief fiscal officer. The money goes towards mobilization, shipping and the cost of disposal.
About 18 drums of hazardous waste and up to 100 batteries are typically collected. The car batteries are handled and shipped out by Bigfoot Auto Services.
“The limit of waste people can bring is around 50 pounds,” said Ralph Borders, the borough’s director of public works. “But if local businesses have more than that, they can pay and then we can take it. Other than that it’s a free event.”
Eligible materials include poisons, disinfectants, solvents, herbicides, used oil, flammable liquids, paints and thinner, furniture stripper, antifreeze, acids, cleaners, pesticides, transmission fluid, wood preservatives, floor wax, printing and photographic chemicals, Ni-Cad and lithium batteries, auto batteries and mercury.
Items that will not be accepted include explosives, blasting caps and gunpowder, reactives such as sodium metal, infectious and radioactive wastes.
