Haines High School seniors Jess Giddings and Patrick Henderson earned a command performance at the regional music festival in Juneau for their duet of “Danny Boy.” Giddings sang and Henderson accompanied her on accordion.
In a solo performance, Lyndsey Jobbins sang “The Loveliest of Trees,” accompanied by pianist Nancy Nash.
The high school band and choirs each won “superior” ratings at the festival, their best showing in several years. About 25 singers and musicians attended. “They worked very hard,” said music teacher Kristina Mulready. The high school jazz band also participated in the event.
Student muscians performed the pieces for a local audience Tuesday in Haines.
Choir pieces at the festival included “Fiddle-I-Fee” by John Purifoy, “Dawn” but Eric William Barnum, “Jonah” by Rollo Dilworth, “I Am Not Yours” by David Dickau and “Let the River Run” by Carly Simon.
Pieces performed by the band at the festival included “On the Range” by Carl Frangkiser, “Springtime Festival” by J. Loivadoti and “Mars” by Gustav Holst.
The school concert for grades K-4 is set for Thursday, April 25 at the elementary gym. A band and choir concert featuring students in grades 5-8 is set for 6:30 p.m. May 8 in the elementary gym.
