Four Haines acts are traveling to Juneau next week for the 39th annual Juneau Folk Fest.
First up during the week-long festival is Lunchmeat and the Pimentos from 9:20 to 10:10 p.m. Friday, April 12 at the Juneau Arts and Culture Center (JACC).
Consisting of Eric Holle (five-string banjo and violin), Kip Kermoian (guitar), Gregg Bigsby (acoustic bass), John Hunt (trombone), Colette Costa (vocals) and Clay Good (drums), Lunchmeat and the Pimentos bring toe-tapping polka, swing and dance beats to the stage.
The group first traveled to the festival 23 years ago, Holle said. Holle said the group has made the trek to Juneau about 10 times to “keep our fans happy.”
“It’s a very egalitarian folk festival, because almost anyone — whether they suck or whether they’re great — can get 15 minutes on the main stage. Or if you’re a band and you play danceable stuff, you can do a dance set for an hour next door,” Holle said.
Julia Scott and the Perpetual Beer Run take the stage after Lunchmeat and the Pimentos, from 11:40 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. at the JACC.
Sweet Sunny North (Len Feldman, Jim Wolfe, Katya Kirsch and Carol Ann Wolfe) have the late-night dance spot Saturday, April 13, from 11:40 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. The band brings “tasty old-time tunes to dance through snow drifts and into the spring.”
Bassoonist Sylvia Heinz will perform solo at 2:45 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at Centennial Hall. Her combination of the bassoon with murder ballads “creates a haunting rendition of traditional tunes.”
John Hunt will also perform separately from Lunchmeat and the Pimentos at 12:45 p.m. Sunday at Centennial Hall.
The event is free.
