The Haines Glacier Bears wrestling team will host a regional championship meet for the first time Nov. 30-Dec. 1.

Head coach Dennis Durr said about 12 Southeast schools with teams of varying sizes will attend the Region V small schools wrestling championships. Eleven wrestlers from Haines will compete.

The top four finishers in each weight class will advance to the state championships in Nikiski. Wrestlers will compete in 15 weight brackets. The top two finishers in each bracket will compete in the spotlight matches, or final rounds.

Durr stressed that a regional wrestling tournament in Haines is an extremely rare occasion.

“It might not ever come back here, so it’s an opportunity for people to see it. It’s an opportunity for relatives to see their kids do it, because they’re usually traveling,” Durr said.

Friday matches begin at 11 a.m. and continue into the evening. Saturday matches begin at 9 a.m. with the spotlight rounds at 6 p.m.

Anyone with previous wrestling experience interested in scorekeeping or timekeeping should contact athletic director Tiana Taylor at 766-6700.
