Helen Tengs celebrated her 86th birthday in her hometown of Anery, Wis. last month. Son Tony Tengs, daughter Christy Tengs Fowler and grandson Marty Fowler made the trip. More than 40 family members and friends gathered at the home of Helen’s brother, Jay Bergstrand, including brother Fred Bergstrand. Following the party, Helen visited friend Hazel Michelson, who moved to Haines with Helen in 1951, and is pictured with Helen in a historic photograph at the Bamboo Room restaurant. Christy said the two were “like teenagers” and danced the polka every afternoon. Marty rode his first rollercoaster at the Mall of America and he and his mom met up with summer restaurant cook Alex Hard in Duluth. Hard served them a homemade dinner with organic, garden vegetables. Helen, Christy and Marty spent a week in Washington, where Helen visited Dorothy Sele and son Darrell Sele in Bothell. While in Seattle, they stayed with Christy’s friend Meredith Tall, who helped Marty complete a school assignment to interview a sports photographer. Marty interviewed Mariners’ photographer Ben Van Houten on Safeco Field, and stayed to watch the final game of the season. Marty paid for the plane tickets for himself and his mom with money he saved waiting tables and washing dishes.

JoAnn Ross Cunningham and Steve Cunningham are boating in Puget Sound and visiting family along the way. While on Bainbridge Island they ran into Julia Scott at the grocery store, who said to say hello to everyone in Haines. Julia is singing with a new group, and is learning how to protect her voice with improved singing techniques. JoAnn and Steve are cruising on their 49-foot Albin-50, which they purchased from the 81-year-old owner who “babied and loved the boat for years.” JoAnn says they have enjoyed beautiful weather during their trip.
