Manager Michael T. Ward said experienced extreme sports enthusiasts and novices will find what they need at “Mike’s Bikes and Boards,” a new bicycle and skateboard shop in the Outfitter building at 0 Mile Old Haines Highway.

“It’s pretty much going to be an extreme sports store. We’re here for Haines. We’re also open to suggestions for what people want,” Ward said.

The store features Benotto and Haro brands of adult touring and mountain bikes, as well as Stolen, Fiction and Haro brands of BMX bicycles. In addition, Ward is building a BMX riding park on land adjacent to the building.

“BMX” stands for bicycle moto-cross and the small bikes are built for jumps and tricks. Besides families needing to upgrade their bicycles, “people who want to get into BMXing should come and see what we have,” Ward said.

The store features safety gear including bike gloves and helmets and Fox brand protective gear and clothes, including knee pads and shin guards. It sells Girl brand skateboards and Arbor longboards, skateboard helmets, and a range of components, and will be getting sliding gloves in for longboarding, he said.

The store also will offer “mountain boards,” a type of off-road skateboard, he said.

Bike varieties include “cruisers,” he said, and bike equipment for sale includes lubes, tools, locks, seats, racks, pumps, tires and specialty Deuter backpacks for bike-riding. The store services the bikes it sells.

The store has some skateboard T-shirts and will be getting a lot more clothes, he said.

Also for sale are Spy sunglasses, including safety-certified ones, and a “huge selection” of Innova golf discs. Store hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week. “We’re here for Haines,” Ward said.

To reach the store, phone 766-3220 and ask for the bike shop.
