Some Things Fishy, a gift shop located on the deck at the Haines Packing cannery site at Letnikof Cove, is open this summer for its third season. “The philosophy of (the store) is homemade items,” said owner Jill Atlas.

Merchandise including aprons, dishcloths, handbags, hats, quilts, and wall hangings are handmade by Atlas and her mother. Atlas also makes various items out of recycled products. For example, she takes coffee bean bags and makes them into pillows.

This year, Atlas added vintage items, including spice jars and clothing, which, she says, are selling fast. The store also sells photography by local Haines photographers.

She sells “typical stuff” too, such as Haines Packing Company T-shirts.

Atlas grew up in Juneau and moved to Haines three years ago, after retiring from her job as a high school principal in Tucson, Ariz. She said she enjoys running the shop because “it’s creative” and fun. Atlas, who also does custom work for people, said she appreciates the support locals have given her so far.

Some Things Fishy is open Monday thru Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It closes for the season on Sept. 30. For more information, call Atlas at 766-2840.
