A visitor from Canada reported a drunken relative harassing her and her children at a downtown motel. The relative left.

Saturday, May 19

Police arrested a 26-year-old man for driving without a valid license. Two other traffic stops resulted in warnings for a broken taillight and speeding.

Friday, May 18

A caller reported a moose on View Street between Third and Fourth avenues.

A caller reported fish carcasses dumped near the end of Beach Road had attracted a bear the previous day.

A caller reported a moose had been frequenting his First Avenue yard the previous two days.

An officer assisted the Civil Air Patrol in finding an emergency locator beacon that was going off. The device was located at the old sawmill in a junked car.

Thursday, May 17

A 19-year-old man was charged with assault and disorderly conduct following an altercation in front of a business on Second Avenue.

A kayak was reported stolen during the past few months from a Beach Road business.

A man was arrested for drunken driving after driving slowly, crossing the center line, not stopping at a stop sign, making a wide turn and not using a turn signal in the downtown area.

A caller reported a paraglider he observed with binoculars who appeared to be in distress at 2 Mile Haines Highway. The paraglider was fine and no accident had occurred.

A caller reported hearing gunshots in the area of Jones Point. An officer spoke with the subjects, who agreed to stop the shooting after learning they were in the townsite and in violation of borough code.

Wednesday, May 16

A minor accident occurred at the road construction area on Main Street when a motorist ran over traffic cones and scraped a dump truck. An officer located the vehicle involved and the driver, and both parties exchanged information.

A caller looking for a dog was referred to the Haines Animal Rescue Kennel.

A caller reported a pickup truck speeding near the playground on Sawmill Road.

A chimney fire was reported on Beach Road, and fire department personnel responded. Prior to their arrival, the owner was able to put out the fire.

A caller was having trouble locating their teenage son who did not come home from school. An officer located the student and had him make transportation arrangements home.

Tuesday, May 15

A power outage problem on Mud Bay Road was referred to Alaska Power and Telephone.

A caller reported a moose wandering in a residential neighborhood in the area of Third Avenue and Union Street.

A caller said people had been driving recklessly in the Chilkoot Estates subdivision and requested extra patrols.

A caller reported a relative continued to receive fraudulent e-mails requesting money.

A business reported a tree fell on an antenna, causing problems with their equipment on Jones Point Road.

A caller reported a vehicle parked at 4 Mile Haines Highway carrying a white pole that was impeding traffic. An officer responded and had the owner remove the pole.

A caller reported a baby moose at 14 Mile Haines Highway that was separated from its mother across the river. An officer responded, and later the baby and mother were bedded down together.

A Small Tracts Road resident reported three bears were in their yard. An officer responded, shot two bears with rubber slugs, and all the bears left.

A hit and run was reported after a motorist ran into a truck parked on Main Street, causing minor damage. An officer responded and initiated a case.

There were 26 medical calls and two calls about dogs.
