Public facilities director Brian Lemcke said road maintenance service area boards in the upper valley could hire a snowplow company to clear roads in two subdivisions after advertisement of the jobs attracted no bidders.

Plow company owners say that conditions on plowing and substandard roads there make the jobs not worth bidding.

Lemcke said that as he understands it, service areas could hire a plow service or seek a re-bid of the work. Those options would likely add to the cost of plowing, he said.

If service areas take no action to secure plowing, the borough may have to step in, Lemcke said. “We have an obligation to get fire equipment and ambulances in there.”
