An officer received a report of a bear next to the school on the Haines Highway. The officer responded and did not locate the bear.

A business reported a bear caused about $4,000 in damage to a construction site near the Southeast Alaska State Fairgrounds. Another business reported a bear caused about $400 in damage to a shop door at 1 Mile Haines Highway.

An officer noticed a bear knocked over a structure at the cemetery. The officer contacted a family member, who said they would repair it.

A caller reported a car on fire at the drive-up portion of the bank. An officer and fire crew responded and extinguished the fire.

Callers reported a bear walking around downtown. An officer responded and did not locate the bear.

A caller reported a bear walking across Main Street toward the track. State troopers were advised, and the bear went into the wooded area across from the school.

A caller reported a bear pushing on the side of their downtown apartment.

Sunday, Aug. 28

A business reported a bear got into their dumpster on Sixth Avenue and Union Street. An officer responded and said the business did not violate the Haines Borough’s bear attraction nuisance ordinance, because the dumpster had been chained shut.

A caller reported a bear across from Alaska Marine Lines.

A caller reported a bear eating berries next to the track at the school. Officers responded and ran the bear away.

A caller reported a bear trying to break into their garage on FAA Road.

A caller reported a bear at Deishu Drive got into some trash.

Saturday, Aug. 27

A caller on Mud Bay Road reported a bear had repeatedly gotten into their dumpster.

Officers found headstones at the Jones Point Cemetery had been knocked over in an apparent act of vandalism. Officers reset the headstones.

A caller reported a black bear had been shocked several times by an electric fence surrounding a chicken coop near 1 Mile Mud Bay Road. An officer responded and the bear ran off into an unpopulated area.

A caller reported hitting a small black bear at 2 Mile Lutak Road. An officer and park ranger responded and located the dead bear, and a wildlife trooper disposed of it.

Friday, Aug. 26

A caller reported a possible out-of-control burn on Allen Road. A fireman responded and declared the fire safe.

A caller reported a fire on a sidewalk. An officer responded and found someone had caught popcorn oil on fire and just set it outside. The officer put out the fire.

Thursday, Aug. 25

A caller reported a bear went into the woods on Small Tracts Road. An officer responded and did not locate the bear.

A caller reported a boulder in the road at about 14 Mile Haines Highway.

Wednesday, Aug. 24

A caller reported a bear broke their garage door on FAA Road.

A business reported a vehicle had been parked in their downtown parking lot for several days. Police contacted the owner, and they agreed to move the vehicle.

A caller reported a bear got into their neighbor’s dumpster on Mud Bay Road.

A caller reported their vehicle had just been stolen from their residence. Officers responded, the vehicle was returned, and police said the incident was a misunderstanding and not a crime.

Tuesday, Aug. 23

A caller reported a reckless driver made an illegal pass and almost caused an accident behind Fort Seward.

A caller reported their goat ran away from a Menaker Road residence.

A bus driver reported seeing a vehicle with a flat tire on the side of the road near 14 Mile Haines Highway. A state trooper responded and assisted the motorist in changing the tire.

There were 10 medical calls and three calls about dogs.
