Burl Sheldon on Tuesday shared his plans to depart as the director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Upper Lynn Canal by early September.
Sheldon in an e-mail to Big Brothers Big Sisters volunteers, families and supporters said his decision to set a last day of “roughly” Sept. 2 was “100 percent about personal growth and wellness.”
“There are different, creative, life-fulfilling pathways that I now need to follow,” he wrote.
Sheldon first served as a Big Brother in Juneau more than 20 years ago. In 2003, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Alaska hired him to create the Upper Lynn Canal program that matches mentors with youth in Haines and Klukwan.
Sheldon said he would stay in Haines to continue as a Big Brother and donor, and to “be directly involved in supporting a transition for the new community director.”
“The right, fresh face, with new energy and inspiration, will promote the mission and help our local program thrive into the future,” he wrote.
