The Haines Borough Assembly following an executive session Tuesday tentatively set a personnel grievance hearing for 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, that departing facilities director Brad Maynard said will discuss grievances he filed against borough administration.

Tuesday’s agenda said the executive session would address a confidential personnel matter that included an employee request for a hearing before the assembly.

Members at the session were to “discuss with the borough clerk and borough attorney whether and when to schedule a hearing regarding this personnel matter.”

Borough manager Mark Earnest and Mayor Jan Hill left the assembly chambers for the executive session, and borough clerk Julie Cozzi said they were potential witnesses for the hearing.

Cozzi was the acting manager Wednesday when Earnest was out of town, and Cozzi said without further direction from borough attorney Brooks Chandler, she could not publicly identify the employee who filed the grievances.

Maynard on Wednesday told the Chilkat Valley News that the scheduled hearing is about his grievances.

Maynard in his letter of resignation dated June 6 cited a “lack of teamwork and support” from administration and wrote that he worked under an “umbrella of personal attacks and indecisive management.” Thursday, June 30, was scheduled to be his last day.

The assembly’s July 19 date for the hearing was pending the availability of a hearing officer. Member Joanne Waterman said the officer might be one of attorney Chandler’s associates, but “there are other options.”
