Lieutenants Mark and Lisa Davey are departing Haines after Sunday’s service at the Salvation Army and will head to the Mat-Su Valley.
“We’ve had a wonderful time serving the community here,” Pastor Mark Davey said. “There are so many things that we got to do as pastors at Salvation Army, because it’s not just our own congregation here, but we get to help out the community.”
The Salvation Army in Haines offers clothing, utility and heating assistance, a food bank at the Chilkat Center, a food pantry for emergency food, and a thrift store.
The Daveys arrived in Haines three years ago for their first appointment as ministers, following stints in Juneau and Ketchikan.
Mark Davey noted their two children were born during their time in Haines. The Daveys will lead their last Haines worship service 11:15 a.m. Sunday, June 26, with a send-off to follow.
They next will become pastors in charge of the Salvation Army in the Mat-Su Valley.
Thrift store volunteer Mary Lou Hart said the Daveys were “very good, they were hard workers and, actually, they were the best people that I’ve had since I’ve been here, myself.”
“Every time somebody comes and we get acquainted with them and their babies, they move away, and we don’t get to see them anymore,” she said.
Hart has been involved with the Salvation Army in Haines for about 20 years.
Lieutenants Austin and Nayomia Anderson are set to arrive as the new Salvation Army pastors in Haines on Wednesday, June 29. They are from Washington and Australia, respectively, and, like the Daveys, Haines is their first assignment as ministers.
A welcome gathering for the Andersons is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, July 1, at the Salvation Army on Union Street. Guests are encouraged to bring a dish to share.
